Just found an older article in “The Wholesaler” – Laars Heating Systems boilers have been put to use in the City of Los Alamitos as pool heaters for the Joint Forces Training Base. This pool was used for the U.S. Olympic water polo team in 1972 and also hosted the 1952 U.S. National Championship for the same sport. It’s a huge pool: 649,000 gallons and the contractors designed the system to use a Laars Rheos+ 2400 boiler as well as a Laars Pennant 2000. The Rheos+ was a no-brainer: it has 97% efficiency and very low NOx (less than 10ppm) as well as fully modulating operation from 25% up to 100% firing rate. The Pennant (in lead-lag implementation) is a stable and highly efficient system (85%) that is a strong secondary heater. The four-stage controls on the Pennant, while not fully modulating like the Rheos+, allow for meeting of heat demand as necessary for the facility.
Looks like a good system overall and shows what Laars can do for its customers. There aren’t too many places that sell parts for these systems. One good one is parts4heating.com

Have you heard of Teledyne Laars or Waterpik Teledyne Laars? Well, forget about those companies, the pool heater company has been sold. Bradford White the water heater company has purchased Laars Heating Systems. Bradford White purchased Laars Heating Systems early last fall and has already begun to invest heavily in research and development. Bradford White has kept most of the knowlegable Laars Staff which will all but eliminate there learning curve. To all low mass copper manufactures, watch out for Laars!

Laars has taken ideas from Europe and come up with one of the highest efficiency home heating system on the market.
The Mascot is 96% Eff. which blows the competition out of the water, comes in three different sizes and combines heat with continues hot water. The mascot’s low price as well as, coming fully packaged (expansion tank built into the boiler) makes installations a snap and very profitable.
More to come…..
